Sustainable palm fruit harvesting as a pathway to conserve Amazon peatland forests

چکیده

Sustainable management of intact tropical peatlands is crucial for climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation and to support the livelihoods local communities. Here, we explore whether sustainable fruit harvesting from Mauritia flexuosa palms could these linked goals by increasing production incomes across 2.8 million hectares most carbon-dense ecosystem in Amazonia: lowland northeastern Peru. M. dioecious, fruits are typically harvested felling female palms; proportion therefore provides a good indicator health stand. Across 93 widely distributed sites, found that increases with travel time urban market, overall, has halved current potential income this resource. However, significantly more where climbing. We estimate region-wide uptake climbing eventually increase 51% its gross value US$62 ± 28.2 yr–1. These findings demonstrate high cost unsustainable resource extraction Neotropical forests outline practical path conserve sustainably exploit one carbon-rich landscapes on planet. A study how Amazon can aid efforts mitigate change.

Mixing Carrots and Sticks to Conserve Forests in the Brazilian Amazon: A Spatial Probabilistic Modeling Approach

Annual forest loss in the Brazilian Amazon had in 2012 declined to less than 5,000 sqkm, from over 27,000 in 2004. Mounting empirical evidence suggests that changes in Brazilian law enforcement strategy and the related governance system may account for a large share of the overall success in curbing deforestation rates. At the same time, Brazil is experimenting with alternative approaches to co...

The Effect of Wider Logging Trails on Rut Formations in the Harvesting of Peatland Forests

Peatlands are very problematic from the bearing capacity point of view. Therefore, logging activities on peatlands in Finland are mainly carried out during the coldest weeks in winter time. More intensive utilisation of peatland forests requires logging activities to be increasingly carried out during unfrozen conditions. Multiple passages of a harvester and a loaded forwarder used for the tran...

Remotely sensed evidence of tropical peatland conversion to oil palm.

Rising global demands for food and biofuels are driving forest clearance in the tropics. Oil-palm expansion contributes to biodiversity declines and carbon emissions in Southeast Asia. However, the magnitudes of these impacts remain largely unquantified until now. We produce a 250-m spatial resolution map of closed canopy oil-palm plantations in the lowlands of Peninsular Malaysia (2 million ha...
